Ford Model T
Industrialization has technologically advanced society and
in part made human lives easier. The mass production of cars by Ford made
travel easier and more accessible to the middle class in the early 1900s with
the Model T. Since the Industrial Revolution, society has demonstrated positive
and negative reactions to mass production. Robots and robotic equipment are
replacing humans in the workforce and lessening the number of positions
available thus contributing to the percentage of unemployment and homelessness
across America. On the other hand, the advancement of robotics is growing and
can be used to enhance and prolong life on earth.

WALL-E showing emotion toward EVE
The 2008 Disney/Pixar movie WALL-E about the last of a clan of recycling robots on earth showed
that robots could not only be put to good use, but can go where humans would not (Earth was engulfed in trash) and could develop personalities. The robot
WALL-E conveys human emotions such as loneliness for being the only robot left
on the planet but also compassion for another robot he stumbles upon called
EVE, while the humans relaxed on a spaceship orbiting Earth.

Hiroshi's geminoid robot
In Japan, Hiroshi Ishiguro has developed an Actroid, a
humanoid robot with lifelike appearance and visible behaviors such as facial
expressions, in his lab at Osaka University. The technology in this robot
allows it to mimic facial expressions, talk, and track eye movements so it
appears to be looking at the same object that the person it is mimicking is
looking at. The art in the design of the robot makes it appear eerily life-like
down to smile and frown lines around the corners of its mouth.

Hi Lauren! I also mentioned Ford and its mass production systems in my blog post. I found the example of Ford very interesting. It is scary to think that robots are 'replacing' humans in the workplace, but it is also encouraging to think that they are making our lives so much easier and more convenient. Thanks for the information regarding the Japanese robot; he looks just like his clone! I enjoyed how you tapped into the emotions that a robot can 'express' and convey to us. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI would have to disagree with your comment that robots are "lessening the number of positions available thus contributing to the percentage of unemployment and homelessness across America". I have not seen the statistics on this statement, but it is hard to claim that robots are contributing to unemployment and homelessness. While robots may be performing jobs that otherwise would be low-paying and sometimes unsafe, the efficiency at which they work is pushing the limits of technology and thus is opening up a whole new world of employment opportunities. We are just now starting to tap into a new generation of technological advances. With that comes new forms of work, rather than a mindless assembly line type of job. Because of this, humans may have to get further education in order to pursue a new job that requires technological knowledge. But at the same time, people will find greater purpose and a greater challenge in the job market that is available. On the other hand, I do agree with you that robots are helping us live longer lives and enhance our quality of life. WALL-E was a clever and cute example. That very situation may be the result of our earth in the future!
